W H Y W E LOVE IT
Carter Bolick’s “embrace
change” attitude about
life translates to her line
of textiles, tabletop, and
home accessories. Bold
color and pattern
combinations are the
signature of her designs,
which she creates largely
on instinct. The
abundance of color in her
bedding makes it easy to
pull out a few shades to
mix and match—Carter
herself changes the look
of her bed each week.
BACKSTO RY
Carter designed rugs for
a major home retailer
before starting India Rose
in 2002. “After 15 years of
designing other people’s
looks, it’s nice to find my
look,” she says. “It’s
eclectic, impulsive, and
definitely not fancy.”

“Buy something you love,
like a quilt or duvet, on
impulse and then layer it
in,” Carter says. “Slowly
collect your look. Buying
everything in one shop is
terribly boring.” Mixing
patterns and colors is
“kind of a gut thing,” but
Carter swears by blending
textures to pull a bed
together. “If you have a
sateen duvet, make sure
nothing else on your bed
is shiny,” she says.

To balance the femininity of the hot pink floral, Carter
suggests bold pairings. Try sheets in apple green and
navy, then add warm tones with a pumpkin quilt and
khaki pillowcase. A cable knit throw adds texture.
